Many of you have asked what a functioning asphalt plant looks like. So, we obtained some aerial photos of a local asphalt plant to show you! This particular plant is owned by William Charles and is located in southern Boone County. It was NOT producing asphalt at the time these photos were taken. This quarry is much larger than the NISC quarry. The NISC quarry on N. Main is about 40 acres. The William Charles quarry in Boone County is over 200 acres! Also, William Charles installed a large berm along the west perimeter of their quarry, completely concealing the plant from the surrounding community. There are far fewer homes in the area of the Boone County quarry. In the past, we have talked to residents in the area who tell us that when conditions are right, the asphalt odors are quite strong.
